Message From The President
Attention Vance Committee Members! Chariman George Ogle has called for a Vance Committee meeting - before the regular chapter meeting - at 5:30 PM. George will be updating the status of publicity efforts.

Our Chapter was instrumental in Memorial Day ceremonies. John Parsons coordinated and conducted the ceremony at the Goleta Cemetery, Peter Bie performed the same role at the Carpinteria Cemetery, Bill Stewart led the ceremony at Elings Park, and many other chapter members attended one or more of these ceremonies and/or lunch at the Memorial Building. Keith Perkins helped the Boy Scouts and Marine Corps League members place flags at veteran grave sites at Calvary Cemetery in Santa Barbara. Bill Stewart, Mario Pintor, Patty Murdy, Bill Frieburg, and Keith Perkins presented Chapter wreaths. The artificial wreath made by Sarah Farmer and fresh floral wreaths provided by Your Image Floral in Ojai were prominently displayed. (Wreaths were generously provided to the Chapter at cost - which cost was largely covered during the May meeting by a generous and spontaneous donation by member Malcolm Hamilton.) Thanks to all for helping to remember the service and sacrifices of those who have passed before us.
Our May meeting was long but productive. New member Toni Squire (Manager, Best Western) was in attendance. Toni and her motel were a big help to us during our hosting of the Moving Wall last year. Sarah Farmer brought to the meeting two of her Lehner Foundation colleagues, Cheryl McPherson and Elizabeth Mason.
Peter Schenck, Commandant of the Marine Corps League and Board Member of Pierre Claeyssens Military Museum and Library gave an hour long presentation to encourage Chapter endorsement of renovations to the Memorial Building to accommodate the Museum. After Mr. Schenck left, discussion of the proposal continued and a vote was taken. The membership overwhelmingly rejected the proposal, largely based upon concerns about encroachment on the availability of the Memorial Building facilities to Veterans’ Organizations.
The membership voted to donate $510 to cover the cost of a bus to transport local homeless veterans to the 15th “Ventura County Stand Down” coming up in July. This event gives these veterans the opportunity to be in contact - in one place - with several organizations that provide services that could provide needed assistance to them. The membership also voted to fund our annual Santa Barbara Scholarship Foundation grants, this year three at $500. The membership also approved a $500 scholarship for member Donald Matter’s daughter.
The 42nd Annual 4th of July Parade in Santa Barbara falls on Tuesday this year and will step off at 1:00 P. M. The “Spirit of ’76” Association will present a celebration of America’s 230th birthday. This year the theme is “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. Presumably the Chapter will be forming up at around Noon, a block off of State Street near the start of the parade - Micheltorrena or some nearby cross street. Look for the helicopter. Wear your uniform or a Chapter T-shirt. Call Dennis Hartman (965-2161) if you need a shirt. Check the Chapter message board for more up to date details.
Elizabeth Truesdail suffered a nasty fall, resulting in cuts above and below her eye which were serious enough to require hospitalization for several days. After months of work Maria Perkins informs me that the new Chapter web site is up and running. Thanks to Maria for her consequential, behind the scenes efforts. And remember to check - and use - the message board on the site for the latest information.
Proudly representing and serving noble warriors with noble intentions,
Keith
The Chapter meets the second Tuesday of every month at the Veterans Memorial Building at 112 W. Cabrillo Boulevard at 6:15 P. M. The meetings usually last around an hour. Several members usually go out for an informal dinner at Moby Dick’s Restaurant (or elsewhere) on the nearby wharf after the meeting.

The Santa Barbara Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America is a tax exempt, non-profit organization. Our members are Vietnam era (you need not have served "in country") Veterans and Associates (individuals from all walks of life who may or may not have served in the military). Our Chapter is successful because of the efforts of Vietnam Veterans, Vietnam Era Veterans, and Associates, all of whom are equally welcomed and prized. The Chapter’s Vance Committee distributes funds to qualified disabled American veterans.
