Message From The President

ALERT! Help welcome home the 425th Civil Affairs Battalion on Saturday, October 7th at the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Barbara. Ceremony commences at 5:30 P. M. followed by a complimentary dinner. Dress is casual.

ALERT! Pass the word. At this month’s meeting Dr. Ed Ryan, Ph. D. (Licensed Clinical Psychologist), combat veteran (purple heart, 9th Division Infantry ’67 - ’68) will be discussing PTSD and other psychological issues(currently serving on National VVA PTSD committee). Dr. Ryan will also be giving us some Agent Orange insights and - in light of the Veterans Administration policy, namely, if you were there, you were exposed - this topic will be of interest to many. Please try to make this presentation yourself and please invite anyone (Vietnam Veteran or otherwise) you know who might be interested in PTSD. Thanks.

Attendance at our September meeting was back up to more normal levels with eighteen in attendance. Hap DeSimone has requested a back-up volunteer to attend California State Council meetings. Let us know if you are interested. Your transportation, food and accommodation expenses will be covered.

We voted to give Giffin Rentals a gift certificate for providing us with a truck for Fiesta, and voted to give a donation to Hillside House for their continued provision of a facility in which we are able to store our Fiesta Booth equipment. We also approved a donation of $250 to Toys For Tots Motorcycle Run. Research is being done by Gerry Roberson regarding getting a cover for our helicopter. The repaired elevators have arrived.

The Vance Committee held a spontaneous meeting to discuss paying the funeral expenses of disabled Vietnam Veteran Ronald Shepherd as funds were not forthcoming from the usual sources. The Committee recommended that we make the payment. The regular meeting then reconvened and the recommendation of the Vance Committee was then approved by the general membership. Ron was given an appropriate burial in the National Cemetery in Riverside. Member William Stewart had generously fulfilled the financial obligation until the Vance Committee took over.

The meeting was adjourned by 8:05 and several of us communed at Moby Dick’s thereafter. I’ll be out of town for our next meeting on Tuesday, October 10th. Please support the visit by Dr. Ryan.

Proudly representing and serving noble warriors with noble intentions,
Keith

The Chapter meets the second Tuesday of every month at the Veterans Memorial Building at 112 W. Cabrillo Boulevard at 6:15 P. M. The meetings usually last around an hour. Several members usually go out for an informal dinner at Moby Dick’s Restaurant (or elsewhere) on the nearby wharf after the meeting.

The Santa Barbara Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America is a tax exempt, non-profit organization. Our members are Vietnam era (you need not have served "in country") Veterans and Associates (individuals from all walks of life who may or may not have served in the military). Our Chapter is successful because of the efforts of Vietnam Veterans, Vietnam Era Veterans, and Associates, all of whom are equally welcomed and prized. The Chapter’s Vance Committee distributes funds to qualified disabled American veterans.
