Message From The President
We were saddened to learn from member Bill Griffin that Vietnam Veteran Dennis Travers died in June of last year.
Member John Selfridge brought in an application for a new Associate Member, Peter Waldburger. Hap DeSimone volunteered to be the Chapter’s PTSD Coordinator. Gerry Roberson reported that the most efficient way to get the wheelchair to Texas for the disabled veteran would be to direct ship it. Vance members reviewed correspondence relative this expenditure. Gerry is also further researching the pros and cons of purchasing the semi-trailer on the Guard property as possible storage space for Fiesta equipment. George Ogle is checking on the permissibility of a cover for the Helicopter and on the timing of the proposed turn-over of the Guard property to the City. We don’t know how that would impact helicopter storage but suspect that this transition is not on the near term horizon. Dan Oroz is checking on the feasibility and practicality of greeting veterans at the Santa Barbara airport.
Charter Member Dennis Hartman mentioned that Charter Member Craig Taylor (recent grandfather of triplets!) is working on a Retrospective of the Chapter and he hopes to show up at a meeting soon to show us the results of his efforts. Craig also notified Hap that he would be happy to serve as the Chapter’s alternate representative for California State Coordinating Council. Also, please contact me if you do not want to be called regarding working at the Fiesta Booth this summer. In addition to his Fiesta and Treasurer responsibilities, Don Matter is researching having the moving wall here again, possibly in 2008.
In a new approach to generate more interest, The Adopt A Veteran program is pursuing a more active course for identifying participants’. We have previously requested that any interested active duty veterans contact us. I am now soliciting contact information FROM YOU for any veteran that YOU would like the chapter to adopt. Just contact me with email or snail mail address and I’ll take over from there. The veteran does not have to be on overseas duty. All active duty personnel are eligible. Recall, this is our Chapter’s way of following through on one of the organization’s mottoes: “Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another.”
We concluded the evening’s business with nominations for the (our - not the presidential which you would think from the press is just around the corner) election. Lifetime honorary member Pat Murdy notified us that she will no longer be able to act as Recording Secretary because she has other charitable activities that she anticipates will be taking up more of her time.
A ballot is enclosed. Please mail you ballot to Chaplain John Parsons at 548 Calle Aparejo, Santa Barbara, CA 93111. Please allow time for delivery so that John can bring the ballots to the meeting on the 13th, at which meeting we look forward to seeing you.
We adjourned at 7:45, an hour-and-a-half meeting, and several of us then gathered at Moby Dick’s for post meeting snacks/meals. It’s individual checks by the way - please consider joining us for this comfortable get together.
Proudly representing and serving noble warriors with noble intentions,
Keith
The Chapter meets the second Tuesday of every month at the Veterans Memorial Building at 112 W. Cabrillo Boulevard at 6:15 P. M. The meetings usually last around an hour. Several members usually go out for an informal dinner at Moby Dick’s Restaurant (or elsewhere) on the nearby wharf after the meeting.

The Santa Barbara Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America is a tax exempt, non-profit organization. Our members are Vietnam era (you need not have served "in country") Veterans and Associates (individuals from all walks of life who may or may not have served in the military). Our Chapter is successful because of the efforts of Vietnam Veterans, Vietnam Era Veterans, and Associates, all of whom are equally welcomed and prized. The Chapter’s Vance Committee distributes funds to qualified disabled American veterans.
